ocr: Gabon has had a multiparty constitution since 1990, when a national conference paved the way for elections. The elections confirmedin power the only constitutional party ofthe previous 20 years - Omar Bongo's PDG. In part this was due to the divided ppposition, which comprised over 30 distinct parties. In 1993,the opposition learned from the mistakes of 1990: and agreed to back only one candidate to challenge Bongo in the presidential elections. Bongo was reelected, but doubts were expressedabout the fairness ofthe elections and future prospects for the democratic process - in Gabon.
